MTN CHAMPS Season 3 Finals – Uyo Brought the Heat
Date: May 5, 2025
Location: Uyo
The city of Uyo came alive as the grand finale of MTN Champs Season 3 took centre stage at the iconic Godswill Akpabio Stadium. The celebrations kicked off on May 5th with a symbolic flag run from the Akwa Ibom Government House – featuring four handovers – before the flag reached its destination: the stadium where it all began.
In a truly emotional twist, “Team MTN Athletes” – discovered right here in Uyo during Season 1 – proudly received the flag. It was a full-circle moment that reminded everyone of just how far the Champs journey has come.
The athletes then passed the flag to key executives from MTN Nigeria and Making of Champs (MOC), marking a powerful exchange between the future of Nigerian athletics and the people helping to shape it. Elder Paul Bassey, the Akwa Ibom State Sports Commissioner, officially flagged off the run, setting the tone for a celebration of excellence, resilience, and local pride.
Shortly after, the press conference brought together top stakeholders: the Sports Commissioner (representing the Governor), the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Essien Umoh, NSSF President Mrs. Olabisi Joseph, alongside MTN Nigeria management and Making of Champs leadership—all aligning on one goal: empowering the next generation of champions.
The Opening ceremony on May 6th brought culture and colour to the stadium. Declared open by the Commissioner of Sports, the event featured electrifying performances by traditional dancers and a stadium brimming with dignitaries and excited fans.
Days 2 and 3 delivered everything MTN Champs stands for – grit, speed, and heart. From photo-finish sprints to new personal bests, young athletes from across Nigeria showcased the raw talent and potential. And while the competition was fierce, the spirit of camaraderie was even stronger with shared dreams, mutual respect, and bonds that went beyond medals.
Adding to the excitement and showcasing another layer of passion and spirit, the Teachers’ Race brought its own blazing finish – speed, skill, and school spirit on full display.
The final day – 9th May, saw champions crowned, medals lifted, and dreams validated. MTN Nigeria’s Chief Financial Officer, Modupe Kadri, delivered a powerful closing speech, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to youth empowerment through sport. In a perfect closing gesture, National Sports Commission Chairman, Shehu Dikko, awarded the standout athletes, drawing the curtain on what had been an unforgettable season.
