And every good thing, no matter how sweet, will always come to a close,” perfectly sums up the story of Africas premier grassroots athletics competition, MTN Champs. The Grand Finale, which held from April 30th to May 3rd, 2024, at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, was simply electrifying.For months, a train of hope and dreams traveled across Nigeria, scouting for the next athletics superstar. This incredible journey ended in Calabar, Cross River State, where the grand finale was celebrated.In an unprecedented move, a record 7 teams made up of 70 athletes, up from 5 Teams presented in Season 1, got to the finals.Among the freshly minted champions, students from Baptist Vocational School emerged as the standout performers, achieving near-total dominance in multiple categories. Despite not securing a gold medal in the Cadet Boys category, their consistent podium finishes were sufficient to place them at the top of the overall rankings.In the Girls category, Baptist Vocational excelled, securing two gold medals and outshining strong competitors such as Delta Secondary School and Government Girls School A, who tied for second place. Their success extended to the Youth Boys category, where they once again demonstrated their athletic excellence.Other notable champions included Abua Government School, who dominated the Youth Girls category; Team MVP A, who excelled in the Junior category; and HIT, who reigned supreme in the Senior category. Each of these victories highlighted the relentless dedication and spirit of the young athletes involved.MTN Champs Season 2 didnt just raise the bar; it redefined the essence of grassroots athletics, continuing its mission to discover and nurture the next generation of athletic superstars.
