MTN Hosts Data on Trial to Address Customers’ Data Usage Concerns

Date: June 6, 2026
Location: Ikoyi

On June 6, MTN hosted Data on Trial at its Headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos, creating a first-of-its-kind platform designed to address one of the most frequently discussed topics among telecom users: data consumption and perceived data depletion.

The four-hour session was conceived as an open and transparent examination of how mobile data is consumed, measured, and charged. By bringing the conversation into a public forum, MTN sought to provide customers with greater clarity while addressing concerns that have continued to shape conversations across the industry.

Modelled after a courtroom proceeding, the event featured a prosecution team representing the interests and concerns of customers, while a defence team represented MTN. The session also brought together regulators, independent auditors, industry stakeholders, members of the media, and other observers, all tasked with examining the facts surrounding data usage.

Throughout the hearing, participants explored common customer concerns, challenged assumptions, and scrutinised technical processes relating to data consumption. Questions were addressed through detailed explanations, independent verification, and data-backed evidence, ensuring that every discussion remained grounded in facts.

The exchanges were robust, insightful, and at times intense, reflecting the importance of the topic and the commitment of all parties to an open and honest dialogue.

Speaking during the session, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola reaffirmed the company’s commitment to transparency and customer trust, stating:

“MTN will never deliberately shortchange you on your data consumption.”

The event underscored MTN’s belief that trust is built through openness, accountability, and meaningful engagement. By creating a platform where customer concerns could be examined publicly and independently, the company demonstrated its willingness to listen, explain, and continuously improve the customer experience.

While the hearing concluded with a symbolic verdict, the conversations continued long after proceedings ended, as participants engaged further during a networking reception that brought together customers, stakeholders, and industry representatives.

Data on Trial was a reflection of MTN’s ongoing commitment to transparency, customer education, and fostering greater confidence in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
